What is GPA & CGPA?

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It is a standard way of measuring academic achievement. The Semester GPA represents your average academic performance for a single semester. The Cumulative GPA (CGPA) represents your average performance across all semesters you have completed at an institution. Both are crucial as they are often used for scholarship eligibility, admission to further studies, honors recognition, and job applications.

How GPA is Calculated

The calculation is a weighted average. Each course grade is weighted by the number of credits (or units) it is worth. The basic formula is:

GPA = Σ(Grade Point × Credits) / Σ(Total Credits)

Example Calculation:

  1. Convert Letter Grades to Grade Points: First, each letter grade is converted to its numerical equivalent on a specific scale. For example, on a 4.0 scale, A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0.
  2. Calculate Quality Points: For each course, multiply the grade point by the number of credits. For a 3-credit course where you earned an 'A' (4.0 points), the quality points are 4.0 * 3 = 12.0.
  3. Sum Totals: Add up all the quality points and all the credit hours from all your courses.
  4. Divide: Divide the total quality points by the total credit hours to get your GPA.

Different Scales & Policies

Universities use various grading scales. The most common is the 4.0 scale. Some institutions use a 4.3 scale (where an A+ is 4.3) or a 5.0 scale. It's important to use the scale your institution follows. Additionally, university policies on Pass/Fail courses, repeated courses, and academic forgiveness can affect your GPA. This calculator allows you to configure these settings for an accurate result.

How to Use This Calculator

  3. Add Courses: Click '+ Add Course' for each subject. Fill in the course name (optional), credits, and the letter grade you received.
  4. Calculate: Click the 'Calculate GPA' button.
  5. Review Results: Your Semester GPA, new CGPA, and other statistics will appear, along with charts visualizing your performance.
  6. Export or Print: Use the 'Print Report' or 'Export as CSV' buttons to save your results.

Tips to Improve Your GPA

  • Prioritize High-Credit Courses: Since GPA is a weighted average, doing well in courses with more credits has a greater impact on your GPA.
  • Understand Retake Policies: If your university allows it, retaking a course in which you performed poorly can sometimes replace the old grade, providing a significant boost.
  • Meet with Academic Advisors: They can help you plan your course load, choose subjects that align with your strengths, and navigate academic policies.
  • Use the "What-If" Feature: Use the 'Target CGPA' feature on this calculator to set goals and understand what grades you need to achieve them.
